The UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center (UPVM), the Department of Visual Communication of the UP College of Fine Arts (UP CFA-Viscom) with support from the UP Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) present KAPITAL: Tribute to Labor which will open on 13 August 2010, Friday, 2:00 PM at the West Wing Gallery of the Vargas.
Kapital is homage to labor and workers’ toil, at a time when their presence is made more obscure by the complex networks of world economies. Hardest hit by the recent economic crisis, workers not just in the Philippines but the world over endure unjust and oftentimes, precarious work conditions. The exhibition turns the idea of ‘capital’ on its head when toil is transformed to tribute by artists who themselves labor to craft images that speak of dignity given to work. This task they take on as they strive to assert and articulate the rights and prospects of nameless workers who fuel the machinery of global industries.
Kapital features works by Pablo Baen-Santos, Ed Coronel, Mideo Cruz, Antipas Delotavo, Leonilo Doloricon, Boy Dominguez, Egai Talusan Fernandez, Mario Garcia, Renato Habulan, Gene de Loyola, Ed Manalo, Neo-Angono Artists Collective, Iggy Rodriguez, Eghai Roxas, Jose Tence Ruiz and Ugat Lahi. Kapital will run until 28 September 2010.
